Choosing an implant dentist in Salt Lake City starts with confirming the license on the Utah Division of Professional Licensing's free lookup, then asking about training, results and total cost.
Check the Utah License
DOPL's Licensee Lookup and Verification System lets you search by name, profession or license number. Every dentist who treats you should show an active Utah license.
General Dentist or Specialist?
There are 12 recognized dental specialties, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics and prosthodontics. The American College of Prosthodontists notes that implant placement is a procedure, not a specialty: a trained general dentist may place implants and should refer complex cases to a prosthodontist, periodontist or oral surgeon.
Questions to Ask
- How much implant training do you have, and how many cases like mine have you done?
- What is your implant success rate?
- What is the total cost, including grafting, imaging and the final teeth?
- Who places the implant and who makes the crown or denture?
Know the Benchmarks
AAOMS cites an overall implant success rate of 95%, and a 2019 review found 96.4% of implants still in place after ten years. A dentist should be able to tell you how their results compare.
